"One gang member who said that girls in the community acted as catalysts for gang violence also noted that they could serve the opposite purpose. They could shun gang boys and the cholo style, and generally serve notice that they would have nothing to do with the gang life-style. Of course a number of 'nice girls' in the community did exactly that, but several girls had romantic ideals of the homeboys who were in gangs. They supported the gangbangers through dating and recognition, but they were not cholas or gang girls."
