"Evening clothes evolved from formal white tie and tails, to the more relaxed, short dinner jacket with black tie, very popular after World War I.  The invention of white tie is widely accredited to Beau Brummell, an English dandy, who became the arbiter of men's fashion at the beginning of the 19th century.  One of his many contributions to men's fashion was the simplification and codification of evening dress, whose essential elements -- the monochromatic color scheme and ensemble of pants, coat, waistcoat and trousers -- are still reflected in today's attire."
