"Anglo-Saxon Shield Boss (partial) Iron. Late 400s-early 500s. ... The shield was usually round, made of wood covered in leather, with a boss or hub at the centre. Its actual size is suggested by the circle drawn into the display. Shields similar to this very early type were still used by the Anglo-Saxons defending against the Norman invasion of England in 1066."
