"Tuareg, North Africa
This Tuareg shield from Algeria is made from the hide of an oryx, a type of large antelope.
The hide was tanned in milk specifically to obtain a light color perfect for rendering decoration.
The symbol painted on the shield is believed to protect its owner from the 'Evil Eye.'"
