"Charles Deas (1818-1867)
A Group of Sioux, 1845
Oil on canvas ...
As Charles Deas traveled through the upper Midwest and the Great Plains attached to military expeditions, he sketched Indians and scenery, which he often translated into highly dramatic scenes of frontier life. This small painting testifies to Deas' keen sense of character and expression. A range of emotion registers in the faces of this family group, from the hawklike wariness of the warrior at left and the meditative focus of th elder at right to the fear evident in the young mother and child. They are restive, filled with anticipation, as they study the smoke signal on the far horizon and watch the lone rider galloping across the plain."
