"Many of the Fenians were professional journalists, scholars and public speakers and as a group, they were prolific writers.  Many left behind remarkable journals and memoirs, which reveal some surprising insights into the nature of the Fenian Movement, and the character and qualities of the men involved in it.  These writings are important to our study of the shillelagh and Shillelagh Law because they suggest that one of the main goals of the Fenians was to end traditional factionalism as a first step towards organizing a secret, but national army.  The effect of this forever altered the status of the shillelagh in Irish culture and it has forever changed the way in which Irish people look upon the shillelagh and Irish shillelagh fighting."
