By the 1840s, men's coats were predominantly in sober tones of black, brown, navy or dark green.
  However, some men expressed a more personal taste in colour choices.
  This striking mint-green fine wool tailcoat was worn by an ancestor of the donor, Captain G P Williams.
  The patch on the lining of the right-hand tail is evidence of this coat being a favourite and well-worn garment.
