"MATCHLOCK MUSKET (ABU FITILA)  ORIGIN ARABIA  DATE ABOUT 1885  CALIBRE .61 inch or 15.5 mm  ...
In 19th century Arabia matchlocks like this were prized possessions, often preferred over more modern firearms.
"This matchlock boasts a twisted steel barrel, metalwork decoration typical of southern Arabia, and a brace around the butt set with mother-of-pearl.  The large brace helps to cushion against strong recoil caused by coarse powder.
"The inscriptions record the owner, Ahmad Salih al-Astah, and the year he possibly received it -- 1304 AH (1885 AD).  Matchlocks like this were often presented to show regard."
