Club Maori people New Zealand Nineteenth century The short whalebone club was used for close fighting, where the fraction of a second more needed to raise larger clubs could prove fatal. It was used to jab at the temple, neck and ribs, and the butt delivered the final blow. Club fighting was learned from boyhood. Grave evidence suggests their use resulted in violent death as early as the 12th century. This one is decorated with a ... mythical sea monster found on a variety of Maori objects."
