"[P]ortraits painted in America for a mixed society based upon a tradition of independent émigré revolt against oppressively established orders, show that far away from the main social centres and the traditional trend-setters, the modest adaptations of the middle classes took on an appearance of distinct modishness. As the fashionable ideal of the polite world scaled down its effects towards something more domestic and less theatrical, two traditions, the aristocratic and the bourgeois met almost for the first time on common ground. The middle classes no longer needed to race after their superiors; those superiors seemed to be running towards them with outstretched arms of welcome."
