"Nacoms were elected for a period of three years, and throughout their tenure in office they could not indulge in sexual relations, eat meat, or drink intoxicants. Enormous prestige was accorded a nacom, especially one renowned for his success in battle. Once a year a festival was held in his honor, during which, Landa reported, 'they bore him in great pomp, perfuming him as if he were an idol, to the temple where they seated him and burned incense to him ..'"
