"The rainbow-colored garments of the Qing period were worn in palaces furnished with porcelains, jades, lacquers, cloisonnE, and ivories. Artists painted meticulous portraits of the Manchu court wearing rich robes whose color and pattern indicate rank and status. These portrait paintings, in which the court nobles and their ladies site silently with eyes gazing straight ahead, convey great faith in the traditions borrowed from China's long history."
