"'Pappenheimer' Sword Steel. Flemish or German, c.1630. ...
The hilt on this sword displays a distinctive, dish-like guard that was introduced in the
Netherlands around 1620. Swords with this type of guard were widely used by soldiers
of all lands when the Thirty Years War devastated much of Central and Northern Europe
(1618-1648). The term 'Pappenheimer' has been applied by modern collectors remembering
the cavalry regiment of Gottfried Heinrich, Graf von Pappenheim, one of the leading field
commanders in that war."
