"Mameluke (or Mamluk) medieval Arabic term denoting troops recruited as slaves, trained, and then freed, serving the Ayyubid caliph. The Mamelukes were horse-archer lancers who trained to a very high standard by following the furusiya manuals. During Louis IX of France's invasion of Egypt in 1248-50, the Mamelukes rebelled and one of their number, Qutuz, seized power."
