"Edward, Prince of Wales  1925  John Saint Helier (1868-1944)  Oil on canvas  In this portrait, Edward's pairing of formal grey trousers, white shirt and dark tie, with a tweed flat cap and brightly patterned Fair Isle sweater demonstrates how he flouted dress conventions.  He took a Scottish workwear garment into his leisure wardrobe.  This informality, even including his pet dog, was typical of his subversive approach to portraiture.  The fawn background of the knitwear is overlaid with a pattern in orange, yellow, maroon and blue, typical of Edward's love of bold colour." ...
